The coastal bluffs at Gaviota State Park reveal a 500-foot-thick cross-section of the geographically extensive Monterey Formation. The naturally cemented, bluff faces resist wave erosion and are tilted to display multiple layers like the pages of a book. The geologic layers contain some nicely preserved fossils, even the complete skeleton of a halibut-like fish. Enjoy nice hiking trails through the park. Nearby; Gaviota Hot Springs, Nojoqui Falls Park, and the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum.

We have 2-campsites booked – so we should have plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the space. There flush toilets, running water and pay showers (bring quarters if you want to shower!)

The campsite has limited parking- so CARPOOLING WILL BE NECESSARY. I will help coordinate carpooling.

The trip is limited to 15-guests. ALL ages welcome. No dogs. Must be fit enough for 1-2 mile hiking/walking and able to assist setting up our tents and campsite.

Gaviota State Park is about 2 hours North of Los Angeles, 33 miles northwest of Santa Barbara. Please plan to leave the LA area between 12 and 2 pm on Friday (before the traffic starts) This will put you at the campsite at 5 pm or before. We will begin with camp set up @ 5 pm. Because this is a group learning event – we need to have everyone arrive by 5 pm so we can set up camp together.

We will also take a mini-field trip into Solvang on Saturday. Maybe do a little shopping and enjoy the little village.

What you will need for the trip:

  • Basic gear for car camping:
  • Sleeping bag/blanket,
  • Pad/mattress/yoga mat,
  • Flashlight/headlamp,
  • Camp chair
  • The hiking clothes and shoes, etc.

We will be minimizing the number of tents and I will try to provide several variations of sizes and types of tents, so we can review how to set up various tent types. I will be asking if you have a tent and what type – before we determine who should bring a tent. If you don’t have a tent, no worries, we will be bunking together to minimize the tents

Planned activities:

-- Camp set up: Learn to set up tents and the campsite, including the camp kitchen, dish washing station, hand washing station and food storage.
-- Camp planning - how to reserve campsites, camp planning checklists and packing lists will be provided.
-- Campfire building: how to construct a camp fire, safety and fire-starting tips
-- Campfire cooking
-- Camp etiquette
