Pump up your productivity with a break

Happy Friday folks! Today is another family day for me. Spending the day with my mom and my son (talked to my daughter on the phone). It has been great to have the break from other work.

Taking the this break has not been easy. I was just getting a on a roll with a number of new endeavors, but this is what needed to happen this week. And to my surprise the break has been really beneficial to my overall outlook on the work I have ahead of me.

I know that giving myself space in between activities can allow my creative side to flourish. Over the past few days I have discovered that I am skipping some activities that are actually really important to me. Some how I have decided that I don’t have the time to work on them, but after the time to reflect these past few days, I am seeing that it isn’t that I don’t have time, it is that I am not prioritizing these things above others. Other activities are winning — and maybe they shouldn’t.

Jonathan Schooler, a professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has shown that people who daydream do better on tests and that daydreaming increases creativity. I find that the space gives ideas room to breathe and sometimes they will evolve into new ideas. Other times, this extra room in my day or my week will allow me to be more focus when I get back at it.

Take a break, daydream, change up your routine or your day, you will see that new things happen, new ideas will come to the surface.

I am going to move continue my break with a movie with the family. I look forward to the new insights to that are coming my way during my continued weekend break.
